'I think you've set a record,' the woman at the gate told me with wide eyes.
'Maybe', I muttered, but it wasn't one I wanted to hold.
After a recent conference, I thought I was heading home a few hours later. In reality, 16 delayed flights later, I was still in the airport writing this post. (Extra credit if you can name the airport.)
But hey, as John Piper would say, 'Don't waste your delayed flight.' 😜 So here's my attempt to redeem this annoyance, and see if we can all learn something from it, especially as it applies to marriage.
In this short (1:30 minutes) video, I argue that we can. See what you think.
Nothing shows us how much we're not in control more than flying.
From departure times that have us waking up with zombies to crazy weather patterns and random mechanical issues, we often find ourselves at the mercy of factors entirely outside of our control.
Which is rare, and ultimately for our good.
When we can't make life work, we can learn to trust in God and experience him more personally.
If we'll submit to him.
Jeremiah 32:27 expresses it perfectly:
'I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?'
In the moment, often my honest answer is something like, 'Yeah, I know you're God, but this is a total mess! If you were in control, you'd fix this! Now!'
It's totally possible to 'know' that God is in control, and not live like it (Exhibit A in the video above), so let's make it personal to your life with these two application questions:
- Where do you find yourself fighting God's control, authority or sovereignty in your life (they're pretty much the same thing), and how do you see that affecting your relationships?
- How would your relationship with your boy/girlfriend, fiancé(e) or spouse improve as you grow in this area?
Let me know in the comments below!
PS I'd also just like to acknowledge that in the grand scheme of things, this is a pretty minor annoyance. People all around the world are facing so much worse.
Snapping turtles are not allowed at the airport!! 😱 Did the employee really say that to you? What a great way to have the Spirit whack you up side the head and give you correction when you least expected it-as you are bowing and worshiping your control idol. And I thought mine had bling on it! 😳 sigh! I tend to control my kids and household. You are not alone! Thanks for your honesty, and Maybe Sharon is thanking the employee. 😜😂😂😂
Hey Linda, no I was joking about the turtle comment, but internally I was the turtle and the turtle was me. 😂 But it’s an issue that God’s working on and I have a long way to go, but I see progress, too, so that’s encouraging. Thanks for watching and your own honesty!
