5 commitments singles must make before they begin dating

If another Christian asked you how to get ready for dating, what would you say?

As I interact with Christians who'd like to start dating, I find that there's a lot of confusion around this topic.

Some people feel like there are pretty obvious, clear steps to take. Things like trying different apps, praying, or meeting people at church.

Others seem to think that there's really not much to do. You just live for Christ, let things unfold, and hope for the best. In God's timing, things will work out.

Still others just sense they're not ready yet. 'I'm just too selfish right now', one guy shared with me recently. (Looking back to that season in my life, I can definitely identify.)

If you've had your first cup of coffee, tea (or energy drink) for the day, you probably realize I haven't answered the question yet. 😂

To be honest, I don't think there's one answer. Or, a simple formula or silver bullet that works for everyone. As in, if you just do these 3 things, you'll meet the perfect person and live happily ever after.

But that doesn't mean God just wants us to sit back and passively let things unfold, either.

Get Ready For Dating: A Balanced, Biblical Approach For Christian Singles

Regular readers of this blog will not be shocked to learn that I recommend a more balanced, biblical approach.

One that includes deep trust in God, yet steady, faith-filled action.

Philippians 2:12-13 gives us the basic, biblical template:

'Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.'

We do our part because God is working in us.

Although it's not easy, we can apply this blueprint to every area of our lives.

Including our preparation for dating.

I'm not saying that, if you prepare well, things will go smoothly. Or, even that you'll eventually get married. God doesn't promise that, so I can't, either.

But, I can promise that, if you build your life around God, and the commitments he calls you to make, that it will go far better for you than if you don't.

And that, even if your path toward dating and marriage is rocky, you will enjoy God's presence and the joy that comes from knowing him.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Romans 15:13)

As we believe - trust - in God, we receive joy, peace and hope. As you get ready to start dating, that's my prayer for you.
